The Manual Desludging Hand Pump (MDHP)

The Manual Desludging Hand Pump (MDHP) is a simple desludging technology developed by Steve Sugden (LSHTM) for use in areas without access to desludging services.

The MDHP in action in Indonesia In partnership with other sanitation stakeholders, Oxfam piloted the MDHP in rural Indonesia during 2008.

The documents available on the linked website outline the process for implementing the MDHP: including initial community discussions to assess acceptability, manufacturing considerations, and integration into local government services to facilitate sustainability.
