In Viet Nam, Oxfam's focus is on education, sustainable livelihoods, Fair Trade, gender equality, and disaster preparedness.

A new way of learning

In remote areas of Viet Nam, ethnic minority H'mong children often lose out when it comes to getting an education.

  • Only 41 per cent of H'mong children enrol in primary school
  • 95 per cent of women from ethnic minorities aged 15-25 are illiterate

How Oxfam is helping

We work with ethnic minority communities to highlight the value of schooling, especially for girls. We also train core groups of teachers in special child-centred teaching methods. They then pass this on to other teachers in their schools. We also provide training on teaching Vietnamese as a second language for ethnic minority children.

The difference is quite clear. Students want to come to school everyday. They feel more confident and are friendlier with others.

Sharing knowledge

In remote areas of Viet Nam, many farmers have limited land and resources they need to make a living.

The absence of farmers’ groups in villages means many families don’t get to share good farming practices.

How Oxfam is helping

We provide training to farmers to help them learn the latest agricultural techniques. We also help communities form local farmers’ groups as a forum for people to share farming tips and information.

The small plot behind my house was left unused and overgrown with tall grasses. I was advised to clear the land and plant sweet potatoes and vegetables. They are part of my family's daily diet now.
