Sudan

In Sudan, Oxfam's focus is on helping those displaced by conflict, peace-building, education, livelihoods, and water and sanitation.
A diverse and challenging environment
Civil wars, tribal struggles and ongoing conflicts over natural resources have left large parts of Sudan desperately poor and underdeveloped.
In recent years the western region of Darfur has seen one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

How Oxfam is helping
We are providing emergency support to those affected by intensifying violence in Darfur.
In the north and south of the country, our work focuses on helping people to make a secure living. We provide small loans and run training schemes to help women in particular build a secure livelihood.

With the money we have earned, we have been able to build ourselves proper homes, made out of concrete. We can pay our children’ school fees and buy medicines when they get sick.![]()

Crisis in Darfur
The Sudanese region of Darfur is home to one of the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and live in cramped camps because of intensifying violence. In total, two million people have been displaced, the majority living in camps either side of the border with Chad.
The area is not safe. Who can protect us? They can attack us whenever they want.

How Oxfam is helping
We have been carrying out an emergency response in Darfur since 2004. Our focus is on water, sanitation and public health. We are also working to reach the growing numbers of people who desperately need our help, in refugee and displaced persons' camps.
