In South Africa, Oxfam's focus is on people affected by HIV and AIDS and gender equality.

Fighting HIV and AIDS

  • 5.3 million people (more than 1 in 5) living with HIV and AIDS

South Africa has been particularly badly affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic.  Most people who die from the disease are cut down in the prime of their lives. Women are disproportionately affected.

How Oxfam is helping

We raise awareness of ways of preventing HIV and AIDS and provide support to those living with HIV. At a national level, we are lobbying for better health services to deal with the pandemic more effectively.

Oxfam's other work in South Africa

  • Promoting gender equality and challenging ideas and beliefs that lead to violence against women
  • Encouraging and supporting South Africa to use its full potential as a regional and global leader in overcoming poverty

A wave of xenophobic attacks in May 2008 targeting immigrants in and around Johannesburg has resulted in several deaths and caused significant displacement.
