In Mexico, Oxfam's focus is on Fair Trade and supporting indigenous communities to make a sustainable living.

Intro

Helping indigenous communities

In Mexico's south-eastern states, the majority of the population is made of up indigenous Amerindians. Literacy rates are low and nearly 19 out of every 20 people live below the poverty line.

Many poor communities rely on the land to make a living. Traditionally, they've had to sell what they produce to middlemen who don't pay them a fair price.

How Oxfam is helping

We work with local farmers and producers to help them get a fair price for their products. We provide training and technical assistance to help them maximise production. We also give advice on marketing opportunities for the fair trade market and encourage women to get involved so they can receive a share of the benefits.

We continue to lobby governments and international bodies for fairer trade rules to help trade become part of the solution to, rather than a cause of poverty.
