Brazil

In Brazil, our focus is on sustainable livelihoods, campaigning for fairer trade rules, and supporting indigenous communities in asserting their rights.

Bringing life to the desert

In drought-prone north-eastern Brazil, some 11 million people are without a permanent supply of clean drinking water.

How Oxfam is helping

We are helping to provide one million households with clean water by building concrete storage tanks to collect the torrential rain that falls in the rainy season. These can store enough water to last the rest of the year.

Before we built the tank, I had to walk to the stream and carry heavy buckets of [dirty] water on my head. Now life is definitely easier.

Overcoming discrimination

Minority ethnic groups traditionally have been discriminated against in Brazil because of their ethnic and cultural identity.

How Oxfam is helping

We are supporting the 4,000-strong Quilombola community in Conceicao das Crioulas in their fight to regain control of their land. We provide training and advice to help the community association develop its craft business as a source of income for the community. We also support projects to raise awareness of the issues faced by the Quilombola people.

All the progress we have been able to make has been down to the determination of the people in the community. But we wouldn't have been able to do it without the support of Oxfam.
