Where does Oxfam GB advertise jobs?

All vacancies are advertised online at: www.oxfam.org.uk/jobs

We do not recruit for countries in general but rather for specific vacancies. To find out about our vacancies you can search our vacancy database for all current open positions. You can also register to recieve information about future vacancies.

Roles may also be advertised in local press or within the local communities in which we work; for these roles you should follow the application instructions within the advert.

If Oxfam GB does not operate in the country where you wish to work, or if we currently have no vacancies there, you may be interested in visiting the Oxfam International website: http://www.oxfam.org.

Does Oxfam offer work experience?

Regrettably, we have a very limited ability to offer work experience opportunities. Most opportunities that exist are likely to be in Oxfam shops, although not all Oxfam shops are able to offer work experience. Age restrictions on operating tills and Oxfam’s responsibilities regarding child protection will limit the roles that school pupils can fulfil.

Applications can be made via the application form on the volunteering pages, which also list current volunteer roles. Alternatively you can send your CV, stating your skills and interests, to givetime@oxfam.org.uk.

How do I go about volunteering as a step towards employment?

We, and all our volunteers, see volunteering as valuable in its own right and not just a route into paid work. But it certainly can be that as well – although we can offer no guarantees! Volunteers are able to apply for paid jobs, including those only advertised internally. For obvious reasons a volunteer would need to have proven themselves in their current role before expecting their volunteering experience to assist an application to a paid post. If you are thinking of volunteering with a view to paid work later, then do not restrict yourself to volunteering only in your specific area of interest. All experience with us is relevant, and many volunteers have moved on to other unrelated volunteer or paid positions over time.

Can I get a work permit from Oxfam GB ?

Our ability to gain a UK work permit for potential employees from outside the EEA depends upon the skill level required for the job.

If we can demonstrate that we could not recruit for a position from within the European Economic Area (EEA), it is generally possible to obtain a work permit on the successful candidate’s behalf.

However, the Home Office requires proof that we have been unsuccessful in recruiting within the EEA. Before we can recruit from outside the EEA, we must have advertised the vacancy conventionally for a minimum of four weeks.

Generally speaking, we have found that we are able to obtain work permits for senior level jobs that require a particular skills and experience. However, we very rarely obtain work permits for roles that could be filled by a candidate from within the EEA.

Similar rules apply in many countries other than the UK.
