Campaigning – are you ready to take the next step?
Up and down the UK – and around the world – ordinary people are making an extraordinary difference in the global fight against poverty.
They’re Oxfam’s activists.
Activists – local campaigners – are part of a dynamic international network dedicated to communicating our vital campaigns for change direct to the public, encouraging others to take part.
Working together for impact, they use their energy and skills, knowledge and passion, to take effective action locally – helping to raise the popular support that’s crucial to putting decision-makers under pressure globally.
How you could make a difference too
Some activists chose to lobby their local MP. It’s a simple thing to do, but one which – taken in numbers – can directly influence policies affecting the world’s poorest people.
Oxfam activist Ruth Stockdale, regularly visited her MP, Patricia Hewitt, while she was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, to lobby her on global trade rules..
“As time ticked by, it was great to hear her views change because of things we said to her, and because of national lobbying,” she says.
“It was also great to hear her talk nationally about the issues – and say how important it was that she was lobbied locally.”
Being an Oxfam activist means making a difference whatever you do.
Many campaigning activities are as sociable and fun as they are rewarding and effective.
They can include staging stunts, holding meetings, organising demos, and working with the media to get publicity and promote debate.
You decide.
And no matter how you decide to campaign, you can rely on advice, support and feedback from Oxfam all the way, helping you to achieve your aims.
Nothing’s more important to Oxfam.
Because from campaigns to ban landmines to controlling arms and changing trade, we’ve seen our local activists make a truly massive difference to Oxfam’s work.
