Black History Month 2008
Black History Month aims to promote knowledge of black history and experience, disseminate information on positive black contributions to British society and heighten the confidence and awareness of black people and their history.

World Teachers' Day
The aim of World Teachers' Day is to emphasise the role of teachers worldwide, as well as to convince teachers themselves of the crucial importance of the role they play in society.

16 October
World Food Day
A day devoted to ensuring humanity's freedom from hunger.

17 October
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
A day proclaimed by the UN to raise awareness of, and inspire action for, the 1.3 billion people currently living in absolute poverty. The Global Call to Action for Poverty (GCAP) will be staging worldwide protests today.

United Nations Day
Marking the anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945.

Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday
