Nelson Mandela: biography and autobiography

This series of lessons is suitable for use in Year 6 (10 - 11 year olds). If you are following the Literacy Strategy, it is particularly designed to fit with Year 6, term 1.

Lesson series:

Aims:
The following objectives are covered in this series of lessons.

Comprehension and composition (text-level work)
- T3 To articulate personal responses to literature, identifying why and how a text affects the reader
- T5 To contribute constructively to shared discussion about literature, responding to and building on the views of others
- T11 To distinguish between biography and autobiography:

  • recognising the effect on the reader of the choice between first and third person;

  • distinguishing between fact, opinion and fiction;

  • distinguishing between implicit and explicit points of view and how these can differ.

- T14 To develop skills of biographical and autobiographical writing in role, adopting distinctive voices such as those of historical characters, through, for instance:

  • preparing a CV;

  • composing a biographical account based on research;

  • describing a person from different perspectives - for example, police description, school report, newspaper obituary.
