CPD activity: An enquiry approach
From the Teaching about Distant Localities online
resource
Why is this place special?
Aims:
To reinforce the value of an enquiry approach for a locality study.
To show how an enquiry approach can be a basis for curriculum planning
What to do:
Before the course, make an enlarged copy of the Enquiry
questions ready for display.
Divide the participants into three and ask them to imagine they
have just arrived in this country from a distant planet. How would
they answer these questions for their own locality? Compare the
answers around the room. It is important to ask the same questions
of a locality in the South as we would ask of our own, but the questions
are not always easy to answer, even for somewhere we know well.
These questions provide a useful framework for planning classroom
work, as they are questions that pupils can try to answer during
the course of their study.
